Objective definition of discharge thresholds for post-fire debris flows

چکیده
Runoff-generated debris flows are a common post-fire hazard in the western United States and growing number of regions around world. As wildfire continues to emerge across broader range geographic plant communities, there is an increasing need for generalizable methods predict debris-flow initiation. The prediction flow during intense rainstorms has traditionally relied upon empirical rainfall thresholds. Rainfall intensity-duration thresholds often developed based on data hydrologic response those rainstorms. They most applicable specific where collected. Here, we present new predictive approach that utilises processes-based models with fundamental physics machine learning estimate discharge runoff-generated initiation four recently burned areas States. We assess performance objectively defined threshold-based predictions from our hybrid framework, which timing within rainstorms, physically numerical simulations runoff, support vector machines method. proposed have good balance between true false floods. Importantly, method permits direct estimation observations limited.

[Research progress in post-fire debris flow].
The occurrence of the secondary disasters of forest fire has significant impacts on the environment quality and human health and safety. Post-fire debris flow is one of the most hazardous secondary disasters of forest fire. To understand the occurrence conditions of post-fire debris flow and to master its occurrence situation are the critical elements in post-fire hazard assessment. From the vi...
متن کاملPerformance testing of the new AMPAC fire debris bag against three other commercial fire debris bags.
Fire debris evidence is collected and stored in a wide range of containers, including various polymer bags. Four different polymer bags have been investigated, including the NYLON, DUO, ALU, and AMPAC bags. The latter is the successor of the Kapak Fire DebrisPAK™. Microscopy and infrared spectroscopy were used to elucidate the composition of the bags. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry was us...
متن کاملDefinition of thresholds for stereoscopic depth.
In the laboratory, thresholds for stereoscopic depth perception are usually determined by asking observers to discriminate between a stimulus with a given depth offset and its mirror image. Threshold is most often defined as the disparity difference that yields 75% or 83% correct responses. Disparities used for clinical tests of stereopsis are much higher. Here it is argued that, among other fa...
متن کاملThe Physics of Debris Flows
Recent advances in theory and experimentation motivate a thorough reassessment of the physics of debris flows. Analyses of flows of dry, granular solids and solid-fluid mixtures provide a foundation for a comprehensive debris flow theory, and experiments provide data that reveal the strengths and limitations of theoretical models. Both debris flow materials and dry granular materials can sustai...
متن کاملIncidental terrestrial imagery for post disaster spatial data capture of debris flows
Consumer-grade digital imagery captured by nonexperts has a great potential for DEM extraction. The portability of the equipment creates opportunities for data collection in difficult and inaccessible mountainous terrain. In this context it provides an important tool enabling rapid response post-disaster planning in regions affected by large scale natural hazard events. The potential of this me...
